City Breaks: Moscow and St. Petersburg
Extending Your Visit - Moscow
For a taste of Russia outside its major cities, we recommend a few days spent in the Golden Ring, which is the hinterland, just beyond Moscow. The Golden Ring is an entire region that comprises of several small historic towns dating back centuries that still retain the original architecture and in many cases, the traditional ways of Russian life. Suzdal is our favorite. This hamlet looks like it came out of a picture postcard, set amidst a scenic backdrop of a river flowing through the idyllic landscape.
We recommend spending a couple of nights at the Hot Springs Hotel, an extremely rustic and charming property. For a true feel of Russia, we suggest trying out a traditional Russian Banya Spa experience, particularly the traditional birch and honey treatments. While in the area, visit the quaint towns such as Pereslavl and Rostov, with their unique architecture, ancient Kremlins and old wooden churches. En route back to Moscow, you may want to visit the wooden architectural ensemble at Vladimir, before returning to the fast-pace of Moscow.
Extending Your Visit - St. Petersburg
While in St. Petersburg, you may want to take a day trip out to see Catherine Palace, Pavlovsk Palace and Peterhof, outside the city center. A little further afield, we suggest venturing out to the ancient capital of Novgorod, dating back to the 11th century, with its beautiful monasteries and ancient churches.
Moscow, the cosmopolitan political and economic capital of Russia is just a short, one-hour flight away and makes a terrific addition to a trip to St. Petersburg.
