Norwegians are natural explorers and this spirit is woven into Oslo’s cityscape. Relive the explorations of some of history’s greatest adventurers, from the Vikings to Thor Heyerdahl. And as the Norwegians discovered new frontiers across the globe, their brothers did the same for the arts – the artist, Edvard Munch, the composer, Edvard Greig and the playwright, Henrik Ibsen are among the many Norwegians who have contributed not only to the cultural legacy of Norway, but also to the rest of the world.
From Oslo, we suggest embarking on a journey to visit the breath-taking beauty of the Norway’s rugged north, Base yourself in Bergen, the birthplace of Edvard Greig, and explore the pristine natural beauty of the fjords and glaciers. One of our favorite excursions is a journey on the Flamsbana the picturesque railroad that winds in and out along the river that runs through the verdant valleys of the Norwegian countryside. If you really want to remove yourself from the urban landscape, we suggest an overnight in Balestrand – this tiny fishing village is reached by boat and is the gateway to many of the enormous glaciers that dot the region.
