A two and a half hour drive from St. Petersburg is the ancient city of Novgorod. A city even older than Moscow, Novgorod was the original democratic state in the land of Rus, during the time of Ivan the Terrible. The oldest church in Russia, St. Sofia is here, as is an extraordinary icon collection. The outdoor architectural museum is not to be missed, with its extraordinary wooden churches and ancient homes.
