The Renaissance of Elegant Travel to Eastern Europe and Russia

Sweden and Denmark

The first thing that strikes visitors to Copenhagen is that it is a city on the move and, as you will no doubt notice, a lot of bicycles! Whether it’s the hustle-bustle on the busy walkways of the Old Fish Market, the quaint frivolity at Tivoli Gardens, the psychedelic wall art in Christiana (Free Town) or the buzz in the cafes (from regular mocha to hi-tech cyber) on Stroget, Copenhagen is definitely a cutting-edge city.

Stockholm typifies the Swedish smorgasbord -- the Baltic city’s apparent serenity belies an abundance of art, history, culture and commerce that makes it an international driving force and an obvious center for the Nobel Prize Committee. Don’t miss an old-fashioned steamboat ride to Drottningholm Castle, home to Sweden’s royal family. The vast range of this city on the water never ceases to amaze us – whether its sculpture at Lindigoe or slalom- canoeing on the Strommen Channel, the medieval architecture of Gamla Stan (Old Town) or the sleek ultra-modern Swedish Design galleries, which dot the entire city. One of our favorite Stockholm experiences is an evening cocktail at the Absolut Ice Bar – all the fixtures are made of ice and they even kit you out in a signature silver parka.

If you have been saturated by everything Copenhagen and Stockholm have to offer, slip away by steamboat to Mariefred, outside of Stockholm. Spend a delightful afternoon visiting the 16th Century Gripsholm Castle, followed by a relaxing dinner and overnight at the charming Gripsholm Vardhus, Sweden’s oldest country inn.
