Kirkenes Snowhotel, Northern Norway
Kirkenes Snowhotel is a unique mixture between some of Arctic Europe’s most famous accommodations. Located 8 km outside of Kirkenes, the Snowhotel is not only the northern most Snowhotel in the world, but also a secluded hideaway perfect for guests traveling in not only during the polar nights of winter but also during the continuous sunshine filled days of summer, as well.
Boasting 20 Snow Rooms rebuilt, redesigned and re-carved by international artists annually, each room showcases a number of themes local to the arctic area. Each room is uniquely different and changes each year. The Snowhotel half of Kirkenes Snowhotel, has rooms to accommodate families (up to 5), as well as, couples. There are several restaurants at Snowhotel but the main restaurant house is "Fjøset" or the barn. Here guests can experience local tastes and the meals of Lapland. For those looking for a nightcap, the hotel is also home to Norway’s largest ice bar!
The other half of Kirkenes Snowhotel boasts luxurious cabins, called Gamme Cabins. These cabins were designed in the traditional style of a Sami hunting or fishing hut. The cabins boast spacious accommodations and include underfloor heating. Large windows allow for optimum Northern Lights viewing from your private cabin.
Kirkenes Snowhotel also showcases some of the best artic activities from husky safaris and northern lights tours to snowmobiling and snowshoeing adventures. Trying to explain the feeling of being pulled across a frozen lake across by a team of huskies is impossible! Uniquely the property also has a heard of resident reindeer too, allowing guests to interact and feed them. King Crab Fishing and Ice Fishing are also among the resort’s more popular activities.
Snowhotel also combines well with Hurtigruten cruises taking guests further afield into Northern Norway. It’s possible to jump onboard for a day of Arctic Char fishing, followed by a visit to Kongsfjord, before returning back to the Snowhotel in the evening.
Northern Norwegians are also notorious for being generously hospitable. During your stay, it is possible to visit with a local family to enjoy a traditional meal and learn about their lifestyle, livelihood and cuisine.
