Four Hidden European Gems
Often overlooked for their larger cousins, we think these four cities are worth a visit in their own right!
Where: Poland, actually closer to Prague and Berlin than to Warsaw!
Why Go: Soon to be European Capital of Culture (2016), Poland’s largest Western city has UNESCO sites, green spaces and a fascinating history, and was much fought after in history. Now a buzzing university town, rebuilt after the devastation of WWII, café culture abounds, plus you are on the edge of Lower Silesia, a region of outstanding natural beauty. Combine with pretty much anywhere in Central Europe!
Stay: Revamped industrial glamor at the Granary – an all suite converted brewery, part of Small Luxury Hotels.
Why Go: Bulgaria’s second largest town, Plovdiv has been reinventing itself. The slow food movement was established in Plovdiv 10 years ago, and the city has truly embraced the trend. It is also the oldest inhabited city in Europe, with a wealth of archaeological sites, and surrounded by two mountain ranges. Combine with Sofia, or Thessaloniki.
Stay: Tiny, ten room Hebros hotel in Old Town, converted from 19th century townhouses and featuring an exceptional restaurant.
Why Go: Beautiful and bijou capital of Bosnia that was host to The Winter Olympics 30 years ago and a real cross between East & West. You could either be in Vienna or Istanbul, depending on which part of the city you are in. The best café culture in the region – it is like a religion, at any time of day you will find every café in the center of town totally full. Take a trip to Mostar, or continue your journey to Montenegro or Belgrade.
Stay: In the heart of Sarajevo Old town at the sleek modernist Central Hotel.
Where: Istrian Peninsula, Croatia
Why Go: Rovinj with distinct Venetian influences is one of the most beautiful places in Croatia and ideal for exploring the rest of Istria – the Croatian region for foodies to visit. Combine with Venice, Slovenia or Zagreb.
Stay: Arguably the best hotel in Croatia, Hotel Monte Mulini.
