Bucovina

Bucovina is full of surprises, and one never quite knows what’s coming next. It could be a fresco of the Gregorian calendar from the 14th century peeling off the walls; or a glass of wine with Franciscan monks from the monastery’s cellar. Bucovina’s mystic quality is only enhanced by its painted monasteries, which collectively form a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and are capped by their distinctive “witch hat” roofs. Each also has its distinctive colours: Moldavita in yellow; Sucevita (still inhabited by nuns) in Green, Humor in Red and - most famously - Voronets in blue. Situated in the northeast of the country, it borders Moldova. Bucovina is also stunning in its natural beauty and for those who are actively inclined, a walk through Ceahlau National Park and the Bicaz Gorges is well worth it. Full of birds, thick forests and Roma mansions in the middle of nowhere, Bucovina is a study in serendipity. Scratch beneath the surface of this mystical region with Exeter International.
