Bukhara

The legendary city of Bukhara has inspired many travellers. Dating back over 2000 years, it has been beautifully preserved, and monuments date as far back as the 9th century. Another well-known stop on the Silk Road, its ancient market place, Registan Square, and the vast Royal Ark complex, have been exquisitely preserved.

The Ark is Bukhara’s oldest surviving structure and while much of it is in ruins after it was bombed by the Red Army in 1920, you can still visit several fascinating museums within its periphery, which cover Bukhara’s history from the Shaybanids to the Tsars. Bukhara is also famous for its carpets and textiles. Don’t miss out on a visit to the Maghoki-Attar mosque and its Museum of Carpets. Archaeologists have found remnants of Zoroastrian and Buddhist temples that once stood here and Bukhara’s Jewish community used to use the very same mosque as a Synagogue for evening prayer – symbolizing a period of immense religious confluence in Bukhara’s history.
