Helsinki

There’s more to Helsinki than meets the eye at first glance. The Market Square and Market Hall bordering Esplanade Park by the sea and the historic district known as the Tori Quarters, is a great place to get a feel for the city. Just off the coast lies Suomennlinna, the sprawling sea fortress, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that hosts the popular Viapori Jazz Festival in August each year.

Art abounds in Helsinki from classics at the Atenaeum to contemporary art at Kiasma. The Senate Square houses Helsinki’s Cathedral, while the Uspenski Cathedral close by is Europe’s largest Orthodox church. The Rock Church is a popular music venue given its excellent acoustics while in the spirit of contemporary solidarity, the Kampii Chapel of Silence is a place where one can stop for a moment of silent companionship to calm oneself. The Finnish love for the outdoors is evident in both the expansive park dedicated to Finnish composer, Sibelius, as well as the Seurasaari ethnographic museum.
