Khiva

Khiva is a city founded on a vision. According to ancient legend, when Shem, one of Noah’s sons, was traveling in the desert, he dreamt of 300 fire-lit torches. Upon awakening, he founded Khiva along the lines of what he saw in his sleep. He then dug a well whose water had a distinct sweetness. One can still visit it in its original location within the old city.

Khiva was one of the most powerful Khanates within Central Asia, under Astrakhans who descended from the Mongol warrior, Genghis Khan. It was an important trading post on the Silk Road, both famous and notorious, in the 19th Century.

Step into the Ichon Qala (the inner walled city) and step back in time to another era. Khiva’s beautiful minarets and ancient fortifications in narrow lanes are best seen at sunrise and sunset. Learn more about the opulence of the Khanate lifestyle as you wander through the Kuhna Arc fort complex. You cannot miss the soaring Kalta Minor minaret embellished with tiny turquoise blue tiles from Turkey. Pause to visit the ancient Allakuli Khan bazaar and caravanserai, a massive covered market, which still exists and continues to be a bustling market place. Immerse yourself in the exotic beauty of Khiva with Exeter International.
