Odessa

Picturesquely perched on the Black Sea coast, Odessa’s diverse population and strategic significance have made it historically remarkable.

Catherine the Great founded Odessa in 1794 and it rose to prominence as the fourth largest city in Imperial Russia. A rich melting pot of influences from the Ancient Greeks to the Tatars, the Lithuanians, and the Ottomans, it is a vibrant center of culture and the arts.

Odessa’s opera house is a stunning testament to its rich heritage, which is well preserved in its historic center. Odessa was also an important center for Ukraine’s Jewish community and you can visit the former Jewish Quarter and the beautifully restored synagogue. Don’t miss out on Odessa’s gorgeous Baroque palaces, the mysterious catacombs, and the Potemkin Steps that lead down to the Black Sea. Navigate Odessa’s unusual charms with Exeter International.
