Salzburg

The city of the “Salt Castle” Salzburg was so named for the barges that carried salt on the Salzach River, but music is its true claim to fame. Austria’s finest musicians, Mozart and Haydn lived here, the legendary film The Sound of Music based on the true story of Maria Von Trapp is set here, and most importantly, it is the venue of one of the world’s most famous music festivals, The Salzburg Festival, which takes place in the city every July and August.

Salzburg’s Old Town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Its largely Baroque architecture takes one back to another era, and you can experience its splendor with a visit to the Dom Quartier and the Cathedral Quarters. The Heilbrunn Palace with its trick fountains is worth visiting for its beautiful park alone. It is also home to Europe’s oldest outdoor theater – the Steintheater. Salzburg is Austria’s beer capital and the beverage has been brewed here for over 600 years!

The Salzburg Strudel is another celebrated culinary tradition. Explore this wonderful city and hear the stories that make it so special with Exeter International’s seasoned guides.
