Tashkent

Compared to Khiva, Bukhara and Samarkand, Tashkent is a large metropolis,  sprawling and spread out. Many historical buildings were completely destroyed by the earthquake 50 years ago, but a day in Tashkent is essential to put the Uzbekistan of today into context, and the city is not without its charm, being green and well planned.

The city has grown into a lively blend of Old Uzbek, Soviet and modern. Farmers in traditional Uzbek dress mingle in the chaotic bazaars on one side of the city, while smartly suited businessmen and women strut the pavements of the other side of town.  Do not miss a visit to the  Hast Imam library to view what is widely regarded as the oldest Koran in existence.
