Day 2
Boka Bay & Kotor | Boka Bay & Kotor

Meet your skipper today for a full day motor boat trip to Boka Bay, one of the most scenic in Montenegro.  You’ll see the picturesque town of Herceg Novi.  The town is situated on a steep hill leading down to the sea with gorgeous piazzas and fortresses to wander, if you like.  There are great views here to the Bay of Kotor.

You will also see Perast and visit the island “Lady of the Rocks”. Perast represents the best preserved entity of this part of the Adriatic. Due to the development of maritime and trade in the 17th and 18th centuries, the town grew with many new palaces and churches.

The Lady of the Rock lies about 125 yards northeast of the island of St. George. The stone plateau in the middle of the sea with a church on it is a result of the enduring efforts of generations of mariners to leave there, in the very heart of the Bay of Boka Kotorska, a testimony of their Christian faith and culture. The island was built artificially by scuttling old ships and depositing stones around a small crag. The name of the island derived from the word “skrpjel” an old word for a crag. The sanctuary was dedicated to the Assumption of the Virgin because this cult (Assunzione della Vergine) was greatly venerated by the Venetians.

As you’re cruising today, you can stop where you like for swimming.

As time allows, you will also stop by the town of Kotor.  Located at the head of a deep fjord, Kotor’s fortified Old Town was strategically built at the foot of a high cliff and is today protected by UNESCO.

Similar to other Dalmatian towns, Kotor’s history is a succession of foreign occupations: Illyrian, Roman, Venetian, Napoleonic, to name just a few.

Stop in the Catholic Cathedral of St. Triphun, which was originally built in the 11th Century, but was later reconstructed several times due to the damages caused by earthquakes. Its Romanesque-gothic interiors feature 14th Century frescoes, vaulted roofs, and a gilded-silver iconostasis. The remains of St. Triphun—Kotor’s patron saint—are also kept here.

You may also stroll around the Square of Arms, named after the Venetian arsenal building located here, and see the Bell Tower, as well as the former pillory where the convicted were chained and exposed to public condemnation.

Time permitting, you may decide to visit the Orthodox Church of St Luca from 12th Century, or climb the 1,500 steps to Kotor’s old fortress walls on the hills above the town. The fortifications start at the very seafront and continue some 3 miles up the steep cliffs and behind the town.

Afterward, continue to the town of Cetinje.  This is the ancient capital of Montenegro and home to the museum of King Nicola (the only king of Montenegro) and the St Peter Monastery.  This town dates to the 15th century and you will find the main street dotted with museums, monasteries and galleries.

Return to the coastline and head back to your resort.  The drive downward is a serpentine road and you’ll have ample time to stop at any of the scenic overlooks that you like.
