This morning, meet your guide and driver at the port for your full day exploration of Albania. Today, you will transfer north of the capital city and to Kruja – the historic hometown picturesquely situated on a hill and stronghold of Albania’s national hero George Kastrioti – Skanderbeg, who successfully fought the Ottoman invasion for more than two decades. Albanian original buildings and the old bazaar will allow you to move into the past.
Kruja was the center of the Albanian resistance against the Ottomans led by Skanderbeg. Driving along the winding mountain road, you will reach the town’s main square marked by the equestrian statue of Skanderbeg wielding his sword. Continuing uphill and above the town, you will reach the historic fortress and citadel which successfully withstood three Ottoman sieges led by Sultan Murat and later by his son Sultan Mehmed II – the conqueror of Constantinople (now Istanbul). It was only after Skanderbeg’s death that the fortress finally fell, and the Albanian resistance was suppressed.
You will visit the Ethnographic Museum, which is housed in the former home of an affluent Ottoman family from the mid-18th century and offers an insight into the life in Kruja centuries ago. You will also take some time to wander the streets and browse the Old Bazaar with its traditional handcrafts. In addition, you will visit the the Dollma Bektashi Tekke and learn about Bektashism in Albania.
Afterwards, we suggest enjoying a homemade refreshment, Rakia, in the home of a local family. You will get the opportunity to connect with this family and learn about their daily life.
Then make your way to Sari Salltiku for stunning views of majestic landscape. You’ll view a large collection of historical and cultural objects as well. During your visit, you can learn about the Dervishi while exploring the Bektashi Temple.
After some time for lunch, which is payable locally, you will transfer to the capital of Albania, Tirana. Your guide will take you on a walking tour of Tirana city center. This will include a visit to the main boulevard, Scanderbeg square, main administrative buildings, presidency, pyramid.
As time allows, you will walk past the Ethem Bey mosque, which was built at the turn of the 19th century and is one of the oldest and most beautiful buildings in the city, featuring rich interior and exterior frescoes. It is currently under construction, so you will visit it from the outside today.
Later this evening, you will then return to Durres to board your ship. You may spend the remainder of your evening at your leisure.
