Meet your guide and driver this morning at the port to be taken to Mauthausen – Gusen Concentration Camp Memorial located outside the market town of Mauthausen.
Mauthausen, a concentration that was established after the annexation of Austria (Anschluss), was known as a labor extermination camp. The concentration camp that you will be visiting today is just the main camp of a network of smaller camps that dot the region.
This camp was one of the first largest concentration camp complexes and one of the last camps liberated by the Allies. This camps nickname was Knochenmühle (bone-mill); in reference to the slave labor that the prisoners were forced to do. Many of the prisoners were political enemies, Polish & Soviet prisoners. Exact numbers of the perished is not exact, but historians and records argue that 100,000 – 300,000 souls were lost.
Note: All touring within the Mauthausen camp is on foot. Please wear comfortable footwear.
