About Basel

Culture enthusiasts are over the moon in Basel, where you’ll find some of the best museums in the country, and an array of fantastic art. More than 40 museums include the Kunstmuseum, one of the world’s great classical art galleries, the Fondation Beyeler, with a vast collection of modern and contemporary art, and the Museum Tinguely, an exhibition of the works of Swiss painter and sculptor Jean Tinguely. Basel’s contemporary edge is further celebrated each June, when the city hosts Art Basel. For those who love design and art, the Frank Gehry-designed Vitra Design Museum is not to be missed. As modern as the city may seem, one of its highlights in the Mittlere Brucke (Middle Bridge), the oldest crossing on the Rhine, dating back to 1226. Cross over to the Kleinbasel neighborhood to visit wine bars, restaurants and a collective of independent boutiques that celebrate local food and goods.
