Christmas Market Vienna

Day 1: Arrival in Vienna

After we check in and freshen up, our guide will meet us in your hotel lobby.

Exeter International Extraordinary Experience
Today we have an appointment at the soaring St. Stephens Cathedral with its unusual colored ceramic tile roof. The guide will take us through the interior of the cathedral and then we will head to the roof, literally! We will take a special elevator and walk through the attic. We’ll then head right out on to the roof of the cathedral. This (safe!) walk will give us one of the more unusual perspectives of historic Vienna.
Then, we will continue on our walking tour of this area. There are so many nooks and crannies to explore – each with unique architectural details from the ages. Today our guide will also show us some of the most famous coffeehouses of Vienna along with some of the grand buildings and monuments along Vienna’s storied Ringstrasse.

This evening, we will take a stroll with Gwen back to the first district and explore the Christmas Markets! The best way to explore the markets is with a hot gluhwein in our hands.

Day 2: Shopping Heaven

Today, we will meet our special shopping guide to discover all the best of Vienna. We will use the local tram and metro with the shopping guide and discover the best in Austrian and European vintage and local shops.

Then this afternoon, we will board the local tram to head to the nearby Belvedere Palace and Gardens. This palace, built as the summer residence of Prince Eugene of Savoy, is situated on a gently sloping hill. The two main palaces (upper and lower) are linked by formal French gardens and both now house wonderful art collections. Upper Belvedere holds a wonderful collection of 19th- and 20th-century art, while the lower palace houses a fine collection of art and sculpture from Vienna’s Golden Age (approximately 1683 to 1780).

This is one of the most amazing collections of Klimt in the world and you will have ample time to explore the exhibition.

The large park here is the site of a gorgeous Christmas Market which we will explore.

Day 3: Foodie Paradise

This morning will be at leisure to explore Vienna independently.

Exeter International Extraordinary Experience
This afternoon our local food insider will meet us in your hotel lobby. Today we will have a tour using public transport (and walking) of her favorite Christmas Markets. The Christmas markets in Vienna are about much more than shopping for trinkets – some feature very unique and tasty cuisine from all parts of Austria. Today we will visit a couple of markets with our guide and taste some of the best regional holiday bites.

Day 4: Christmas Treats

Exeter International Extraordinary Experience
Today we will meet our driver for a short transfer and head to a local bakery.

Today we will learn the secret of traditional Austrian Christmas cookies. Austrian Christmas cookies are an essential part of Austrian Christmas traditions. These small, delicious pastries are baked with much love and care during the Advent season. Each family has its own recipes, passed down from generation to generation. In this course, you will bake four of the most well-known types of cookies: Vanillekipferl, Linzer Augen, Brotlaibchen, and Schoko-Spritzgebäck. Our class will end with a tasting of our creations, with the remainder packed up for us to enjoy throughout the rest of our trip.
After our class, our driver will take us back to our hotel.

Tonight, after it’s closed to the public, we will have entry to the grandest palace in all of Austria. The design of Schönbrunn is bound largely with the personality of Maria Theresa, one of the Hapsburg’s greatest Empresses. Originally designed by Johann Bernhard Fischer Von Erlach, the architecture was inspired by the grand palaces of Europe – particularly of Versailles. The palace stands today as a combination of Austrian Rococo and Classic Baroque symmetry. This was more than a residence for the Hapsburgs and the palace was used for both diplomatic meetings and imperial events to showcase the influence of the Austro-Hungarian empire in Europe. Today it’s a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Site and is one of the most prominent attractions in all of Austria, getting over 8 million visitors per year.

Tonight we will enter the palace after the crowds are gone so we can enjoy the staterooms all to ourselves.

The large courtyard here has a wonderful Christmas and New Year’s market, that is Gwen’s personal favorite.

Christmas Market, Salzburg

Day 5: Salzburg

After we check in and some time at leisure, we will meet our driver and guide and head to Hellbrun Christmas Market to attend the annual Krampuswelt.

Watching Krampuswelt at Hellbrunn Palace is an unforgettable experience, as the historic setting enhances the eerie, mystical atmosphere of the event. The palace grounds, adorned with festive lights and a charming Christmas market, provide a stark contrast to the terrifying Krampus creatures that emerge from the darkness. The echoing sounds of bells and growls against the backdrop of the palace make for a spine-chilling yet exhilarating spectacle.

Krampuswelt is a thrilling annual event in Austria that celebrates the folklore of Krampus, the horned companion of Saint Nicholas who punishes naughty children. It features eerie processions with elaborately costumed Krampus figures, traditional Alpine music, and fiery performances that bring this dark legend to life. The event is a mix of fear and festivity, drawing visitors eager to experience an authentic piece of Austrian holiday culture.

Day 6: The Sound of Music

This morning our guide will meet us for an overview walking tour of historic Salzburg. Salzburg’s Old Town with its world famous baroque architecture is one of the best-preserved city centers in Europe and was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The Hohensalzburg Fortress, strategically located on a hill overlooking the old town, is one of the largest medieval castles in Europe. Originally built in the 11th century as a simple bailey with wooden walls, the structure was gradually expanded and strengthened in the following centuries. Because the fortress never came under a military siege and was surrendered without a fight to Napoleon’s army, this is one of the best-preserved castles in Europe.

We will also see the Salzburg Cathedral, a 17th-century Baroque building which was the site of Mozart’s baptism. We can also see the Benedictine St. Peter’s abbey, the oldest monastery in Austria. The Romanesque abbey church, still in use today, was dedicated in the 12th century. Its interiors were refurbished in the Rococo style in the 18th century. The abbey also houses the oldest library in Austria including 800 ancient manuscripts and some 100,000 volumes, focusing on medieval church history, art history, and items relating to the local history of Salzburg,

Salzburg’s most famous son is of course Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and we will get a chance to visit his birthplace. His family lived here for 27 years and today we will see items from Mozart’s childhood.

All throughout our sightseeing today, we’ll also be noticing sites from The Sound of Music, including Mirabel Gardens (“Do-Re-Mi”), the abbey and the cemetery where the family hid from the Nazis.

Salzburg Lake District

Day 7: Lake District

This morning will be at leisure to explore Salzburg independently.

Today our guide and driver will take us through Salzkammergut – the Lake District. This gorgeous region is dotted with picturesque towns, lakes and mountains and gives you a glimpse into the stunning landscape that has made this region so famous.

St. Wolfgang is one of the most beautiful towns in the area. The Christmas market here is open this afternoon and has a romantic theme to it, featuring local craftspeople, holiday décor and, of course, delicious food and drink.

As time allows, we might take the gondola in the neighboring town of St. Gilgen up the Zwölferhorn Mountain for one of the highest Christmas Markets. This is simple – some mulled wine, a nativity scene and some small stalls, but the 360-degree panoramic view is amazing.

Day 8: Arrival to Seefeld

After some time at leisure, we will head out into the village.

The Seefeld Christmas Market is a charming alpine holiday market set in the picturesque Tyrolean village. It offers cozy wooden stalls selling handcrafted gifts, festive decorations, and delicious seasonal treats.

Day 9: Innsbruck Magic

This morning we will meet our driver and head to Innsbruck, where our guide will be waiting for us.

Innsbruck has a long and eventful history and the charming Old Town is more than 800 years old. It is a beautiful blend of the gothic and baroque and a nice mix of charm and sophistication. Here we will see the Gothic Hofkirche, one of Europe’s finest court churches and the Hofburg Palace, built in the 15th century. Do not miss a photo stop at the famous Golden Roof, gorgeously covered in shining golden tiles and dating from 1500.

We will enjoy typical and customary delicacies and specialties on a leisurely walk – and many larger and smaller dishes – through the beautiful state capital. We will have the chance to taste world-renowned specialties from sweet to salty. During the walk, we will not only taste samples of the food, you will learn more about Austrian everyday life and food culture.

The center of town is lavishly decorated for the holidays and the streets leading from the Golden Roof have a lovely Christmas market with handicrafts and delicious winter treats. We will have ample time to explore it before meeting our driver for our transfer back to Seefeld.

Day 10: Swarovski Crystal World

This morning we will meet our guide and driver to head a bit outside the city. Today we have an appointment in nearby Wattens, where we will  visit Swarovski Crystal World.

There are beautiful gardens here but the most outstanding visit is “the Giant.” This is a series of rooms, called Chambers of Wonder, that are thematic vignettes featuring Swarovski Crystals. There are 17 of these rooms and the new Chandelier of Grief, designed with Yayoi Kusama, is just amazing.
Today we will be met by one of the crystal specialists and they’ll take us through the rooms.
