Travel to Norway with Exeter International

Leigh Landis, our amazing Norway expert.  Leigh's knowledge of Norway, and of all Scandinavia, is invaluable when planning a trip to this famously expensive region. Leigh can maximize your time and utilize the most cost effective methods of travel within the region.

Norway was at the front of the line when Mother Nature was designing our planet, indeed the country’s slogan is Powered by Nature.  Go for jaw-dropping landscapes and vistas. Visit in summer for long nights and in winter for snow and adventure.

Norway’s fingers of land spread out from the northern tip of Europe like the rays of the rising sun. Stunning landscapes, charming cities, and friendly folk come together to create a warm appeal and foster several great artists, adventurers and philosophers. Norway has one of the most ancient recorded civilizations in the world, and archaeologists date it as far back as the 11th century BC.

Its extensive coastlines provide sustenance and nurture a strong spirit of the sea in the Norwegians – which is perhaps best exemplified in its strong Viking heritage.

Norway has produced several musicians, artists, writers and filmmakers, as well as sports persons, of international repute, as the arts and sports receive widespread support from its society. Venture across glaciers, through the fjords and explore Norway’s rich natural and cultural heritage with Exeter International.

Best time To Go

Norway is a year round destination. June July and August are the best months to travel to Norway for fine weather, but also the busiest times of the year when availability is at a premium and plenty of advice planning is required.

In March there may still be snow on the ground and it is a good time to visit for more daylight than during the winter. April and May are more spring like, but you may still find snow in certain locations.

In mid-September the weather starts turning and October is the start of winter. If you do wish to travel in winter December through February is the best time and November should be avoided.

Insider's Guide

Where to Travel in Norway

Whilst nature is king in Norway, it is important not to forget the cities. Oslo, the capital, is dramatically set around the Oslofjord. The city is home to the Royal family and is small enough to be intimate and special, yet large enough to offer world-class dining and attractions.

On the west coast is the city of Bergen. Bryggen, the heart of the old harbor is a UNESCO Heritage site, with some of the buildings dating back to 1702! The gable-end houses, narrow alley and bustling port have a unique atmosphere.

We highly recommend you travel by train and boat from Oslo to Bergen for over 300 miles of spectacular scenery. En route, you may stop at Myrdal and experience the Flam Railway. 12.5 miles in length, this piece of track rises more than half a mile through waterfalls and around cliff edges.

A stay in the picturesque village of Balestrand is one of the best introductions to the Sognefjord, the longest and deepest fjord in Norway.

If you want to see more of the country, Norway is one of our most popular self-drive destinations. Go armed with our pre-planned, pre-programmed GPS!
