Insider's Guide

Where to Travel in Germany

The largest and most modern of the Central European capitals, Berlin has reinvented itself since reunification into Europe’s powerhouse city. Each area has its own unique character, from the historical heart in Mitte to the hipster center of Kreuzberg. With over 80 museums from contemporary art to WWII history, and the outstanding Berlin Philharmonic, high culture predominates.

Take a day trip to the nearby Potsdam.  This enchanting town was the summer residence of the kings of Prussia and offers gorgeous gardens and parks and several palaces, from the Cecelienhof – the site of the Potsdam Agreement, to the intimate Rococo gem of Sans Souci.

Known as the “Florence of the Elbe,” Dresden has been reconstructed to its former glory after the destruction during WWII. The treasures of the Green Vault and the impressive collection of the Zwinger are simply unforgettable.

Not to be overlooked, Munich in the heart of Bavaria, is a city that has something for everybody – from history buffs to art aficionados, to car lovers and beer enthusiasts. After taking in all the different architectural styles of the Old Town, including the magnificent Neo-Gothic Town Hall, don’t miss the wonderful food market of Viktualienmarkt. The surrounding countryside is dotted with castles and charming villages, with the impressive Alps looming in the background.

How To Travel in Austria

Customized Travel

Our team of travel experts can customize a unique program for you for travel in Germany based on your exact preferences and interests.

Pre or Post River Cruise Extension

Before you embark your  river cruise, spend a few days in one of the cities close by. Berlin is a wonderful place to visit before or after any cruise.  A three night stay at one of the city’s luxury hotels may be the perfect start or end to your cruise experience.

White-Glove Self-Drive

Enjoy the freedom of driving yourself ? Germany is the land of the autobahn and driving here is an experience in itself. For the most thrill, plan a journey along the Alpine Road.  For a lush scenery, opt for the Black Forest and cap your trip with a stay at a spa in Baden Baden. To journey back in time, choose the 220 miles of the Romantic Road connecting dozens of medieval fortified towns and castles from Würzberg, through Rothenburg ob der Tauber, to Neuschwanstein near Füssen. Our self-drive programs allow you to do just that with the help of a pre-programmed GPS delivered to you before you leave home and with the services of our 24 hour local staff. We can craft the perfect self-drive itinerary to fit your taste, pace and budget. Let us introduce you to the essentials of each city and give you suggestions of what to do on your own. Just plug in your Exeter pre-programmed GPS and let your adventure begin!

Extend your Stay

Germany combines well with the the Czech Republic and Poland (from Dresden) and Austria. Road  connections between the Central European capitals are excellent, or we can arrange for a private car and driver. For the ultimate independence you can choose to self-drive, and we will arrange for you to meet your guides in each destination. Alternatively, you may choose to take trains between the various cities.
